The easiest way to combat those who take advantage...is by not giving them the opportunity to do so in the first place!  Sounds simple enough, but honestly, the best defense to this kind of abuse is a smart offense.  And that starts with knowledge!  You need to find out what kind of service and input a potential client is expecting from you to begin with.  Once you know that, it is up to you to dictate the terms of your service and not leave it up to them.

When you make that initial contact...when this person calls you and says, &quot;Hey, Karen!  Come on over and take a look at my listing!&quot;, that&#039;s when you need to find out what&#039;s what!  The ball is in your court.  You need to verify what is expected of you.  If they want you to give your input and suggestions as to how to proceed, that&#039;s a consultation and you need to be getting paid for your time.  If they are simply looking for an estimate with the possibility of requiring future services from you, then that&#039;s all you give them.  An estimate. 

This is just one of the many issues both our workshops and home study course cover very thoroughly so our HSE&#039;s will never get burned!  Knowing the difference between a free estimate and a consultation allows you to set your own terms and gives you the upper hand, preventing anyone from ever taking advantage of you, again.  The key is to be prepared and take control of the situation ahead of time.  Knowledge is power!
